So get ready to explore & discover its rich culture and history on this unforgettable experience, because the thriving and beauty of this cosmopolitan city of Oslo will be revealed in this travel trip.

The Parliament building of Norway

Travelling to Europe coming from Asia is a bit expensive, but with the proper planning, you'll be able save hefty amount of money and enjoy it at the same time. For my Europe trip, Oslo, Norway is our first stop. So, I'll share to you some highlights of my itinerary that hopefully will help you guys. Lets start!

Oslo Gardermoen
We arrived at Oslo Gardermoen airport by afternoon, and headed straight to the city center of Oslo via train. Since the weather is transitioning from Spring to Summer, it's perfect to wander around. Also, the sun sets late around 10 to 11pm. It's an advantage since we were able to maximize our tour around the city of Oslo.

  • From the airport, look for a ticketing machine and puchase a regular express train ticket, from Oslo Lufthavn going to Oslo Central Station, and it will cost you around 180 NOK.
  • Travel time approximately 30minutes.

Karl Johans Gate

 Karl Johans Gate
The main street of city of Oslo. You can start walking from Oslo Central Station up to the Royal Palace of Norway. There's a lot of hotels and apartments around Karl Johans gate, and it's an easy access to different tourist spots and activities. So, better check for your accommodation in this area.

Here you can find everything, from cafe, restaurants, shops and parks. Since the weather just perfect, you will get to see some street performers, vendors, and even beggars that are properly assigned on a designated area only. Isn't amazing?

Royal Palace

Build in Neo-classical style during 1800s. This is the official home of the Norweigan Monarchy and the most important King's residences. It is situated on the end of the famous Karl Johans gate, and from here you'll have the best view of Oslo's main capital. A park surrounds the palace.

Changing of the guards is a nice event to watch. It takes place everyday at 1:30pm.

  • The Royal Palace is open everyday in summer
  • It's in the end part of the main street Karl Johans gate.
Opera House

Oslo's Opera House is located right at the harbour and it is made of white marbles and resembles an iceberg going to the sea. You can also visit and climb its roof and enjoy panoramic views of city of Oslo.

Once you entered the building, the interior is mainly made of oak, illuminated by large glass facades with its three main halls. Even their restroom looks awesome! So, have some time to visit this master piece.

Sorry Fern! High fashion mode. :D

  • The Opera House is walking distance from Karl Johans Gate, going to the harbour.
  • Make sure to bring your sun glasses during day time. It will protect you from glare and bright reflections since the Opera House is made from white marble.
Akershus Fortress

This Fortress is a great place to discover Oslo's history for more than 700 years. The medieval castle was build and completed during 1300s to protect Oslo. It withstood a number of sieges throughout the ages. The castle was modernised and converted into Renaissance during King Christian IV reign. You can visit and explore the castle for free.

The fortress area is a popular venue for major events, including concerts, public holiday celebrations, and ceremonies. Also a nice place to catch the sunset!

  • Akershus Fortress is just 10-15 minute walk from Karl Johans Gate / Oslo Central Station or 5 minute walk from Opera House.
  • Entering the Fortress grounds is free, but the castle itself will cost you around 65 Kroner (11USD).

Aker Brygger

Is a melting pot where people meet, mingle and visit in the inner harbour of Oslo. With restaurants and indoor shopping stores, making Aker Brygger one of Oslo's go to place for both local and tourist. It is also used for concerts, fashion, arts and culture events.

It's a nice place to spend time with friends over good meal. For us, we hop on a boat and had our catch up over dinner with our friends who's living and working in Norway.

Oslo at Night
Strolling at night in Oslo is a must, specially with the sun sets around 11pm. We were able to stretched some activities because of this. Most of the restaurants and coffee shops are still open. Had some quick walk over coffee

This cosmopolitan city of Oslo is beyond words. With a spectacular natural landscapes surrounding the city, picturesque view in every angle, great restaurants, and friendly locals, makes it perfect for travelers like me. Though, it is one of the most expensive city in the world, that didn't stop up exploring this beautiful country. Can't wait to get back and explore other parts of it.
